In the world today, things are becoming increasingly difficult because of the global epidemic, recession, and other attendant forces. There has been massive retrenchment, and some people are finding it difficult to cope. It has become necessary for anyone who wants to live a healthy and balanced life to adopt some self-care strategies to survive these difficult times. It has often been said that desperate times require desperate measures. This is why understanding self-care strategies is important. Self-care strategies are the measures you put in place to take care of yourself mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially. Self-care is simply the act of putting yourself first in a world that wants to put you last. Thus, below are some self-care strategies that will help you survive all the difficult times:
1. Exercise: There is something that exercise does to the body, especially in difficult times. It releases endorphins, which are the hormones responsible for pleasure and relaxation. This feel-good hormone helps to release tension and anxiety. It also reduces stress and tiredness. This is because difficult times can be very stressful—like hell—but exercising often is a good self-care strategy for surviving trying times. It will also keep you mentally and physically fit to face the challenges. It is not compulsory that you must visit the gym for you to do exercise. You can try taking a walk around the neighborhood or jogging twelve to fifteen poles each day. It will help to burn down calories and high cholesterol in your body.
2. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is simply the process of being present-minded. In a world filled with distractions, everyone who is going through difficult times should endeavor to have a clear head. This is because there are a lot of things competing for your attention. Your mobile phones, gadgets, habits, family members, friends, societal problems and so forth. Mindfulness gives you the opportunity to catch your breath and know that you are alive while going through all these in the first place. You can achieve mindfulness through meditation, yoga sessions, sitting still in a room, and spending time in nature.
3. Focus on what you can control: You should have it at the back of your mind that you cannot control everything. You are not the Omnipotent God we know. You are mere mortal, passing through this phase called life. Life will throw challenges at you every now and then, but it’s up to you to put your focus on the ones you can control. For the ones you can’t control, hand them over to God. Focusing on what you can control while passing through difficult times helps conserve your energy for more productive ventures and better results.
4. Connect with friends and family: No matter what you are going through, never forget the road that leads you home. The truth is that difficult times come and go, but your real friends and family will remain constant. Always have a good support system. This will do you some good in difficult times. You cannot afford to do life alone. No man is an island. We are meant to help each other in trying times. Connecting with family and friends is a good self-care strategy because it gives you the opportunity to share your worries and anxiety with someone you can trust.
5. Practice journaling and affirmation: There is an urge to express your emotions while passing through difficult times. If you don’t, the emotions will accumulate and possibly find expression through frustration and depression. Most of the people you see battling depression today are just people who don’t know how to process their emotions. That’s why journaling is vital to the mental health of any individual passing through difficult times. It is important that you document the thought processes, patterns, routines, and lessons learned from these difficult moments. There is also the aspect of saying what you want to see accomplished in your life. This is because there is power in your tongue. Affirmation helps to channel your energy positively for a positive result.
6. Eat well: You should try to eat very well. It’s not a time to go on a hunger strike because you are passing through difficult times. Pay attention to what you are eating and drinking. You should also be careful not to indulge in overeating or overdrinking as this may cause health issues in the nearest future. Difficult times is not the time to punish yourself by abstaining from food. It’s a time to embark on self-care strategies to survive difficult times by eating well because your body will thank you later. Endeavor to eat plenty fruits and vegetables. Drink enough water and always stay hydrated.
7. Good rest or sleep: To everything under the sun, there is a time for it. After working hard throughout the day, it is advised that you take some time to rest or sleep very well. It helps to calm down the stress imposed by the difficult times. It also helps the worn out tissues in the body to renew and old cells to rebuild. Quality sleep is essential self-care strategy for surviving difficult times. Lack of good sleep can lead to other ailments like high blood pressure, migraine headache, poor sight, etc.
8. Practice gratitude: It always good to put everything into God’s hand and thank God for everything. This is where faith comes in. You can either worry about your problems or hand them over to God with thanksgiving. Gratitude is an attitude you must posses for you to be able to survive difficult times. Be grateful that you are alive and healthy first. There are people who would wish they were alive to pass through these difficult times. This life you are living is a gift, treat it as such. Accept the gift of life and other necessities of life that you have with a grateful heart. If you are grateful for small blessings, big blessings will follow suit. You should also learn to appreciate people who do good things for you during difficult times, no matter how small it may seem. Appreciation is an application for more. Gratitude is the best attitude always.
