“Coalition Must Be About Competence, Not Zoning” -Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has firmly rejected calls from Southern political leaders and stakeholders to step aside in favor of a Southern presidential candidate.

The demand, which has gained momentum among coalition members, is based on the principles of equity, justice, and power rotation, with many arguing that the South deserves its turn at the presidency.

In a statement released after a closed-door meeting with ADC leaders, Atiku declared, “I will not be pressured into abandoning my constitutional right to aspire. Let every qualified member test their popularity through a credible primary. Zoning must not be used to silence competence.” This stance has sparked a heated backlash from members of the Obidient Movement, who insist that Peter Obi is the only acceptable candidate.

The Obidients have taken to social media, stating that it’s either Obi or they will pull out of the coalition. This development has exposed deep cracks in the coalition, with party insiders warning that it may collapse before it even begins. While Atiku’s camp argues for a merit-based contest, the Obidients accuse him of attempting to hijack the structure and sabotage the collective dream.

According to political watchers, the coalition is on the brink of collapse, as both sides refuse to shift ground. If not quickly addressed, this friction may undermine efforts to build a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections. The fragile alliance, which was formed to challenge the ruling party, now faces serious challenges that threaten its very existence.
