The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards promoting clean energy and sustainable transportation with the passage of the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill, 2025.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, aims to establish a framework for Nigeria’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs), focusing on local manufacturing, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
According to Senator Kalu, “This Bill is not just about reducing carbon emissions; it’s about driving local innovation, creating thousands of jobs, and ensuring Nigeria plays a leading role in global green mobility.” The proposed legislation highlights include:
– Developing a nationwide network of EV charging stations
– Government incentives to encourage EV adoption
– Integrating renewable energy into the transport sector
The bill sets ambitious targets, including:
– Promoting local manufacturing of electric vehicles
– Creating employment across the EV value chain
– Establishing Nigeria as a hub for clean transportation in West Africa
A key provision of the bill requires foreign automakers to partner with licensed Nigerian assemblers and establish local assembly plants within three years. They must also achieve at least 30% local sourcing of components by 2030.
Senator Kalu’s bill aims to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, improve environmental health, and position Nigeria as a regional leader in clean energy transportation. The bill’s passage is a significant step towards a more sustainable transportation system in Nigeria.
