The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been adopted as the platform for the Atiku-led Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a key meeting, leaders of the Coalition agreed to reposition the ADC as their vehicle to challenge for power. Former Senate President David Mark emerged as the interim National Chairman, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named interim National Secretary.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Aregbesola emphasized the importance of a political party being a force for good. “A political party is not a platform for opportunism. It is not a mere vehicle to power for the few, nor a tool for personal ambition. A political party, in its truest form, is a living institution built on values, guided by ideals, and accountable to the people it seeks to serve.”
Aregbesola highlighted the need for the ADC to be a party with a clear ideological compass, committed to democratic values, rule of law, social justice, accountability, and national development. He stated, “We must become an institution where internal democracy is not just preached but practiced… Young people, women, and the marginalized have a real voice, not symbolic inclusion.”
The party’s vision includes:
– Effective party structures from the ward to the national level
– Meaningful inclusion of diverse groups
– Recognition of special interests
– Tangible actions that benefit the people
Aregbesola concluded by calling on supporters to “Hold me accountable. Challenge me when I stray. And stand with me as we begin this journey to rebuild our party, restore its soul, and return politics to its rightful place—as a service to the people.
