The internal crisis plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn as 11 members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) have vehemently opposed the reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.
Following a press conference where Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum announced Anyanwu’s reinstatement, the 11 NWC members swiftly rejected the decision, citing lack of authority.
The dissenting members, who include high-ranking officials, also disputed the postponement of the June 30th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. Instead, they affirmed that the meeting remains scheduled as planned.
The development comes on the heels of a meeting between PDP leaders and INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu. The internal conflict within the PDP continues to escalate, with the party’s leadership facing intense scrutiny.
The controversy surrounding the party’s national secretary has been ongoing, with a clear divide between Wike’s camp backing Senator Samuel Anyanwu and the South-East zone advocating for Sunday Ude-Okoye. Ude-Okoye was initially chosen to replace Anyanwu after he stepped down to pursue the Imo State governorship election in November 2023.
However, in a recent media address, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum cited extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including governors, the Board of Trustees, and the National Assembly caucus, as the basis for reinstating Anyanwu. Damagum emphasized that the party’s unity and survival take precedence over individual interests, particularly with the upcoming Federal Capital Territory elections on the horizon.
The PDP’s internal struggles have sparked intense debate, with the party’s leadership facing challenges in balancing competing interests and maintaining cohesion.
