Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, quashing speculation about potentially becoming Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.
In a recent interview on Sunday Politics, Obi stated, “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.” When asked about the possibility of joining forces with Atiku, Obi dismissed the idea, saying, “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”
Obi emphasized his commitment to the Labour Party while highlighting his involvement in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which aims to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. “I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor’s declaration sets the stage for a potentially heated 2027 presidential election, with President Tinubu eyeing a second term in office. Obi’s statement underscores his confidence in his qualifications and vision for Nigeria’s future.
